| This is a marvelous unreleased and historic trio gig recorded in the early days of the "downtown scene" before I was able to figure out how I felt about Eugene Chadbourne. The tour diary by Chadbourne is both hilarious and harrowing when dealing with the mishaps of the trio's Italian tour. The music itself is another thing. It is completely free and amazingly well-organized. There is a good deal of humor involved, but this is only one part of a more diverse and blend of approaches. Japanese trumpet madman is in especially fine form, using assorted mutes and coming up with his own unique collection of sounds. Centazzo, who traveled with five boxes of assorted percussion, is most diverse and is closer to modern classical music in his selection of percussion. Rather than overdoing it, Dr. Chad reacts to both of his cohorts with sympathetic interplay. What truly stands out is that this trio sounds like a magical combination of sounds that is constantly shifting between dynamic and sections. There is nothing too bombastic or over the top here. What makes this historic is the we find three improvisers from different scenes/countries early in the careers, playing together with a new vocabulary and combing their forces to come up with something unique and new and fresh. --BLG |
